Out of curiosity, did you read The Martian too? I've heard people describe PHM as "the martian if he wanted a movie adaptation"

Hahaha no! This isn't my usual fair -- I'm more of a Becky Chambers / NK Jemisin scifi person

I got it for listening with my kids, since I knew it was more or less okay for all ages

And also as a present for my best friend who wanted the audiobook

But truly my attention span is all over the place right now. I'm moving, so I don't have my server up, but when I do I'll show you my listening history 😂

I also have a rule that I don't read scifi/fantasy from white dudes anymore unless a women recs it to me

Dies the Fire by SM Stirling enraged me so much that I had to put that rule into place

I sympathize with the moving that would make any concentrated reading impossible for me haha. I've never heard about Dies the Fire so I'm really eager to hear how much of a pile of junk it was

There was like a scene with I think a big macho pilot and a literal dumb blond and he was so condescending I threw the book and purged as much of it as I could from my mind

Oh this is an alternate history novel? Those are either really thoughtful or (much more commonly) really turgid and I don't blame you for trying to forget haha

The premise was sort of interesting, in which all electricity disappeared suddenly from the world (I think?)

But then it was like, “what if all the neckbeards, podcast bros, and incels got together to do a renfair”

And that was a question I did not need answered

so basically a more "elevated" form of the fanfiction where he-man comes over and asks me how to win at magic the gathering
