Interesting discussion on ageism in tech - including dressing for your role, younger hiring managers, and LLMs cobbling the seniority pipeline.
I only read some (it has gotten very long), but the bunch of comments I did read were spot on. I, too, have removed older stuff from my resume (but not my LinkedIn profile). I list the date of my Master's degree (2002) since I do not make it clear how much time and career pre-date it. And in interviews I walk a fine line between comments showing my depth of experience and not revealing that my career started during the Dark Ages.
I dunno. I tend to enjoy watching minds explode when I tell people I took my first computer science class in 1991 and my first course on Microsoft Excel in 1998! 🤣
I do tend to only reveal that intel post hire though lol
Being an older person (40+) in tech is weird for sure. That discussion is spot on about attire, though. I feel like people respond well to me because I look the part (jeans, band t-shirt, big beard, shaved head). If tech folks knew my band t-shirt was purchased at a show in 1994 and my head is shaved because I went bald 20 years ago they would likely react slightly differently.
I feel this. I recently went blonde and everyone is like “that’s such a great idea to go light for spring/summer. How trendy!” And I’m over here like, “er, sure.”Has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I’ve gotten so gray that it’s easier to be blonde than brunette! Less trips to my hairdresser. Nope. Nothing to see here my fellow trend setting youths! 🥸
